  • 05/22/07 - Dr. Ron Stall be visiting our division and will give a seminar entitled:“An Update on an Syndemics Approach to HIV Prevention among Gay Men" Liechtag 205 at 12 noon. Ron worked at UCSF for many years and then at CDC. He is now at U Pitt, where he is heavily involved in the MACS study.

  • 03/02/07 - The UCSD Center for AIDS Research will be hosting the First Annual International HIV Research Day on March 2, 2007 at UCSD's Leichtag Auditorium. The program will feature James Hakim, MD from the University of Zimbabwe, Harare and Robert Hogg, PhD from the Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS Research, Vancouver, Canada.
  • 2/7/07 - IHCCM will be co-sponsoring a conference with Sergio Bautista on February 7th, click here for more information.
  • 1/26/07 - Dr. Richard Garfein will be giving a talk entitled 'Prevention of HIV and HCV Transmission Among Injection Drug Users' during the AIDS clinical rounds at the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center on January 26 at 8:00 am.

  • 12/13/06 - The division of International Health and Cross-Cultural Medicine has been awarded an AIDS Walk San Diego/San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative (AWSD/SDHFC) grant for calendar year 2007. Funding will support HIV prevention activities of our partner NGO, Pro-COMUSIDA, in Tijuana Mexico.

  • 11/6/06 - The Division of International Health and Cross-Cultural Medicine has received an award from the U.S. Office of Minority Health (OMH) and the Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools (HSHPS) to support four six-month training internships for qualified Hispanic students or recent graduates interested in research experiences in HIV/AIDS and related infections with Latino populations living in the US-Mexico border region.     Dr. Thomas Novotny is a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He was previously an assistant surgeon general in the United States Public Health Service, serving as CDC liaison to the World Bank and as deputy assistant secretary for International and Refugee Health. While with the World Bank, he worked extensively in public health systems development, tobacco control, and health systems reform, particularly in Eastern Europe.

  • Land of Extremes: Prevention and Care Range From Bold to Bleak  Article in Science magazine discussing Mexico's ongoing treatment initiatives, including those by IHCCM researchers.
  • A study by Dr. Robin Pollini of injection drug users in Baltimore found that more than two-thirds had witnessed an overdose, but many didn't know how to react to seek help.  United Press International, Health Behavior News Service.
  • July 21, 2006 - Congratulations to Dr. Catherine Todd for her recent Clinical Scientist Development Award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.  It was awarded for her ongoing projects in Afghanistan focusing on high risk populations and pregnant women.
