Professor Hagop Akiskal is Director, International Mood Center at the
University of California at San Diego, Chief of the Mood Disorders Program in
the VA Hospital, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Affective
Disorders. Previously, for five years from 1990 to 1994, he was Senior
Science Advisor at the National Institute of Mental Health in charge
for national research and public health policy for affective and
related disorders. His research spans temperaments, depression, bipolar
disorder, and their comorbidity with anxiety disorders. He served
as chair of the U.S. psychiatric delegation to develop therapeutic
and community resources following the Armenian earthquake in 1988,
leading to cohort studies of earthquake survivors. During the past
decade, he has served as International Adviser for the French National
Multi-Site Studies on the clinical epidemiology of bipolar disorders
(EPIDEP and EPIMAN). His current research in Italy, Germany and Japan,
among others, has focused on differences in temperament as risk factors
for emotional disorders. He speaks five languages and has been invited
to lecture in over 250 universities in 50 countries.
